Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance
A digital platform built with the same care as the service it represents.
The challenge
Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) provides a life-saving emergency response service across Scotland, funded entirely by public donations. Their website, built in 2017, had reached its limits - a restrictive CMS made content management slow and costly, and the design hadn't kept pace with how people actually used the site.
That mattered most on mobile, where 60% of visitors arrived, yet the experience wasn't built for it. Donor journeys weren't smooth, campaign pages were difficult to create, and donation tracking wasn't reliable - problems that hit hardest at exactly the moments SCAA needed people to give with confidence. The charity needed a platform that matched the professionalism and care behind the service itself, one that made it easier for supporters to engage and give.
The solution
We worked closely with SCAA to push their creative further than their previous site had - including brand elements they hadn't yet made full use of, right down to their own tartan appearing in the site's footer. Partway through the website build, SCAA refreshed its brand with a new logo, and we adapted the build around it rather than letting the change disrupt what had already been designed.
Some of SCAA's work carries real sensitivity, and the site was designed with that in mind - handling helicopter flight details carefully, without disclosing specifics about individual incidents. A dynamic homepage map with real-time tooltips brings that same care into something genuinely engaging, letting visitors explore where and how SCAA operates without exposing anything that shouldn't be public.
Behind the scenes, the donation platform moved onto Giant Giving, giving SCAA a secure, flexible way to manage online giving and campaign-specific pages. Donorflex CRM integration streamlined donor management, and a custom-built consent system - with automatic data clean-up - kept the whole platform genuinely privacy-first, not just compliant on paper.
The impact
Supporters now have a smoother way to give, and SCAA's own team has far more control over content and campaigns than the old CMS ever allowed - changes that used to mean developer time now happen in-house. Behind the scenes, the Donorflex integration and automated consent management have cut down on manual admin, freeing up time for the work that actually matters.
Supporters have gone on to donate significantly through the platform, a sign of genuine trust in both the charity and the giving experience itself.
That relationship has continued well past launch. The Make Your Mark campaign invited supporters to add their own name, or a loved one's, to the tail of a new helicopter when they donated - a genuinely personal way to give, built on the platform, and a clear sign of how far the collaboration between SCAA and Giant Digital has grown since the site first launched.
We were so impressed by Giant Digital's enthusiasm, response to the brief and passion shown for supporting organisations to thrive in the charity sector. There was a clear understanding and adoption of innovation (particularly around donations) and we felt a strong chemistry between SCAA and Giant Digital which has been critical for this project.
